Tallow Cream Benefits: What It's Used For and Why It Beats Lotion

15 Jan 2025

Tallow cream is a moisturiser made mainly from rendered beef fat (tallow), often blended with a nourishing oil such as jojoba. It has become popular in Australia as a simple, natural alternative to conventional lotions, especially for dry and sensitive skin. Here's what tallow cream is used for, its main benefits and how it compares to the lotions most of us grew up with.

Quick answer: tallow cream is used as an everyday face and body moisturiser, particularly for dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin. Its main benefits are rich, long-lasting moisture, fats that are similar to the skin's own oils, naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E and K, and a short ingredient list.

What Is Tallow Cream?

Tallow is made by slowly rendering suet, the firm fat around the kidneys of cattle, into a clean, stable fat. Tallow cream takes that fat and turns it into a soft, spreadable moisturiser. Some creams are just tallow and a carrier oil, while others add essential oils for a gentle scent.

People have used animal fats to protect their skin for thousands of years, from ancient Egyptian balms to the tallow salves that were household staples for centuries. Tallow cream is a modern take on that tradition.

What Is Tallow Cream Used For?

  • Face moisturiser: a thin layer morning or night, on its own or over a serum.
  • Body moisturiser: arms, legs and shoulders, especially after a shower.
  • Dry patches: elbows, knees, hands and heels.
  • Sensitive and eczema-prone skin: an unscented cream with very few ingredients is a gentle option for reactive skin.
  • Babies and kids: many parents use an unscented tallow cream on little ones' dry skin (patch test first).
  • Mature skin: extra nourishment for skin that has become drier with age.

The Benefits of Tallow Cream

1. Similar to your skin's natural oils

Tallow's fatty acids, such as oleic, stearic and palmitic acid, are similar to those in human sebum, the oil our skin makes to stay soft and protected. That's why tallow cream tends to absorb well rather than just sitting on top of the skin.

2. Rich, long-lasting moisture

Because tallow is both softening and protective, it helps lock moisture in. Many people find one application lasts much longer than a water-based lotion, which is why tallow cream is so popular for dry skin.

3. Naturally occurring vitamins

Tallow naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Grass-fed tallow is also higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and has a better omega-3 profile than tallow from grain-fed cattle.

4. A short ingredient list

Most lotions are mostly water, so they need emulsifiers and preservatives to stay stable. Tallow cream is water-free, so it can be made with just a few ingredients. Fewer ingredients means fewer potential irritants, which matters for sensitive skin.

5. Gentle on sensitive skin

For people whose skin reacts to fragrance or long ingredient lists, an unscented tallow cream is a simple option. Many of our customers with eczema-prone skin use our Skin Tallow Cream as their everyday moisturiser. It isn't a medical treatment, so always patch test and speak to your GP or dermatologist about any skin condition.

Tallow Cream vs Traditional Lotion

Tallow cream Typical lotion
Made mostly from tallow and a nourishing oil Made mostly from water
No water, so no need for synthetic preservatives Needs preservatives and emulsifiers
Rich texture, a little goes a long way Light texture, often reapplied through the day
Short ingredient list Often includes fragrance, silicones and fillers

Tallow cream feels richer than lotion. Used in a thin layer, it melts in and leaves skin feeling soft rather than greasy.

Why Grass-Fed Tallow Matters

The quality of tallow depends on how the animal was raised. Grass-fed, grass-finished cattle raised on pasture produce tallow with more CLA, a better balance of omega fatty acids and more fat-soluble vitamins than grain-fed cattle. Using tallow also means a valuable part of the animal isn't wasted.

Our tallow comes from grass-fed, grass-finished cattle on the NSW South Coast, and every jar is handcrafted in small batches in Australia.

How to Switch from Lotion to Tallow Cream

  1. Patch test a small amount on your inner wrist or jawline and wait 24 hours.
  2. For the first week, use tallow cream once a day, ideally at night.
  3. If your skin is happy, use it morning and night in place of your lotion.
  4. Apply to slightly damp skin after showering to help lock in moisture.

A pea-sized amount covers the whole face. Warm it between your fingertips first so it spreads easily. For more help, see our guide to switching to tallow skincare.
